Sneaking it in

I really don't have much time to exercise.  But I figure every little bit must count.  Here are the little things I'm doing.

1.  Walk up/down the stairs at work 5 times about 2-3 times a day.  It's enough to get my warmed up and also quiet the hunger pains.  Funny how physical activity can quiet hunger pains.
2.  Dance around while carrying my daughter.  I carry her in my arms while trying (ineffectively) to follow dance-aerobic routines I find on Youtube.
3.  Walk up/down the stairs at home for about 15-20 minutes a night while my daughter is sleeping.
4.  Go for a jog/run every morning for about 1-2 miles.  1 mile if I have a bit of time. 2 miles if I have a lot of time.  These jog/walks take only 15 minutes on average... 30 if I'm going for the 2 mile mark.

I really do hope that these little things add up.

Shake like Shakira... jiggle like a trucker

Ever since using MyFitnessPal.com, I have felt very motivated about working out and tracking my calories.  With their food diary function, I am learning to avoid certain foods, and bring enough foods that will keep me full.  In fact, I have even lost 2 pounds.  (Which means a lot to me.)

Yesterday, I was feeling playful and confident so I looked up on YouTube "Shake your hips like Shakira."  After practicing for 5 minutes, I wrapped a sarong around my waist and asked my husband to watch me.  I lifted my shirt a little bit so he could better see my post-pregnancy, stretch-marked belly... after all... it's a belly dance right?

"Tell me if I'm doing it kind of right!"  I said to him happily.

He looked embarassed and asked me: "Do you want the truth? ... You need to lose some weight before you do this.  Cause your belly is jiggling a lot.  You move one way, and your belly takes a few seconds to catch up."  Then he started to laugh.

Needless to say, I felt very deflated... and not in a good way.  I felt awful, ugly, like an obese trucker.  He realized what he said, and felt very sorry.  But the harm has been done...

I know I'm fat, and I'm trying to get healthier.  But jokes like that are really hurtful, and make me feel unmotivated.  My husband says I'm beautiful... but now I know he doesn't mean all of me is beautiful... just certain parts.  I wish all of me was beautiful to him...  I need to lose weight...

Breaking up the work out

As a working mom of a 1 year old, I don't feel like I have the luxury of an extended work out at the gym. So I have started to jog about 1 mile in the morning and then go to the gym for a 30 minute session during my lunch break.

Working out at the gym for an hour before or after work doesn't sound like much.  But once you add in the time it takes to go, return, and clean up... that 1 hour will easily cost 2 hours of my day.

Do the math with me:
15 minutes to drive to the gym and put away my stuff in the locker.
60 minutes of cardio + strength training
15 minutes to gather my stuff from the locker and drive home
20-30 minutes to shower and clean up.
Total: 2 hours required for a 1 hour workout.

Also, please remember... I have a 1 year old to feed and put to bed!  By the time all the home and family tasks are done, it's 8PM easy.

The question is: "Will multiple small sessions be as effective as one long sessions?"

The answer is: "It depends. Duration is important, but so is intensity.  A stroll for 60 minutes is not going to be as effective as 30 minutes of jogging and sprinting."

But REMEMBER the definition of an Aerobic/Cardio workout!  It means you have to keep your heart rate up for more than 10 minutes.  So if you're looking for improved cardio health, you will need to set aside at least 15 minutes of time for some good cardio excercise.

Factoids:
The American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association recommend:
Adults under 65 should have a minimum of a 30 minutes of moderately intense cardio (brisk walking) 5 days a week.  OR 20 minutes of vigorously intense cardio (running) 3 days a week.  Strength training should be done 2 days a week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend:  To lose weight or maintain weight loss, 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity may be necessary

The American College of Sports Medicine recommend:
Mini sessions should be a minimum of 10 minutes long.

So, that's what I have to say about that.

My Fitness Pal app

There are a lot of calorie counting apps out there on the net.  I've tried Lose It, Daily Plate, and the one provided by Slim Fast.  I never liked them very much. I found them to be a bit tedious or too hard to use on a consistent basis.  However, recently I found "MyFitnessPal."  It syncs between my smartphone and the internet, so I can either enter via my phone or from the computer.

I like it!

Death of the yogurt diet.

Can I really call it a yogurt diet if I haven't actually eaten yogurt in 2 days?  (-_-)  I'm a big fat liar.

It's odd, but eating 'healthy' food is very unsatisfying.  It's a psychological phenomenon that has scientific backing!  For the two days that I tried to follow this strict diet, I was so unsatisfied that when I did cheat... it was with junk food from the taco-bell drive thru!

But I'm not beating myself up.  Do you know why?  Because I HAVE been jogging every morning for the past 3 days.  =)  I jog/walk every morning for about 10 minutes before my daughter wakes up.  It's a very modest amount, but I feel motivated!  Using google maps, I measured out the distance that I'm jogging.  So far it's been 0.7 miles each day.  The stiffness in the muscle has faded, so tomorrow I'm going to try to aim for .9 miles.

It takes me 10 minutes to run 0.7 miles.  I hope by the end of next week, it will only take my 10 minutes to run 0.9 miles.  =)

And yea... I think I'm going to quit this stupid yogurt diet.  Back to nice normal portion control.

Yogurt diet Day 2

I've only been on this diet for 24 hours and I want to quit it already.  My palate is depressed and unsatisfied.  I think the thing I miss the most is nice starchy carbs!  Although, I have to admit that keeping my appetite on such a tight leash can be a bit empowering.  I almost feel like a dominatrix to my appetite.  * whipppssssh *

Unfortunately, I lost it at the barbecue!  I ate a bunch of grilled meat, a yummy hotdog on a moist bun and snacked on corn chips.  They were so delicious...  * drool *  And then this morning, the idea of eating yogurt made me feel angry!  So I went to the Burger King drive-thru and picked up a breakfast sausage muffin and breakfast wrap.  I'm pretty sure those two items together must have been more than 500 calories.  I think they butter their muffin's to taste better.

But to redeem myself, I did go jogging for nearly 15 minutes this morning.  =)  For a big girl like me, that's A LOT!  My legs were already a stiff from my short jog yesterday... so I feel proud that I was able to jog 15 minutes today!

Even though I fell off the wagon for the last 2 meals, I know it's not the end of the world!  I will probably try to jog another 10-15 minutes tonight and try to stick to the diet for the next two meals.  I bought myself some delicious tilapia fillets, and will plan to eat a fillet on a bed of fresh arugula from my little container gardens =)  the only thing I forgot to prepare was some vegetables to snack on.

Summary
Current Weight: 167.5 lbs
Goal: 160 lbs
Breakfast: Breakfast wrap and Breakfast muffin from Burger King
Lunch: Banana, Granola Bar, Strawberry Banana Yogurt
Dinner: Tilapia with Arugula
Snack: More bananas....

Day1 Yoplait 2-wk tune up

On June 11th, I have a wedding to attend.  This is a wedding of an old friend who I haven't seen in over a year!  I HAVE TO LOOK GOOD!  Perfect time to try out one of these fad diets  =)

The Yoplait 2 Week Tune Up:
Eat a cup of low or nonfat yogurt with a serving of grain and a serving of fruit for breakfast and lunch.  Then eat a sensible, lean protein dinner.  For snacks, you can eat vegetables.  In 2 weeks, you will lose up to 5 pounds!

There is no magic about eating 2 cups of yogurt a day.  This is all about portion control.  The convenient thing about this diet is that:
1.  It's convenient to buy yogurt that's already in the correct size. Plus it's cheaper than a shake diet.
2.  There is almost NO cooking except for dinner.
3.  The website (Yoplait Two Week Tune UP) has a nice 14 day meal planner for you with easy to follow recipes for each of your meals.

By the way, Yoplait is a popular brand of yogurt here in America.  And this "two week tune up" is a way for them to market their product.  Still, the meal planner they provide is VERY convenient.  When I was trying to figure out what "grain" to eat for my next 14 days... this meal planner gave me lots of ideas.

Summary of Today:

Weight: 168 lbs.
Goal: 160 lbs.
Breakfast: Watermelon, banana-strawberry yogurt, a cup of O's cereal
Lunch: Mango, plain yogurt, a cup of brown rice
Snacks: Carrot sticks
Activity: 10 minute morning jog
Possible landmine situation:  Memorial Day barbecue tonight.  (>_<)

Food Porn

I'm so hungry right now. I'm sooooo hungry.  In my hunger, all I want are delicious fatty items that are loaded with salt, fat and carbs.  What am I craving?  Chinese sticky rice wrapped in chicken skin and then seasoned and deep fried to a delicious crisp!  Or creamy pasta filled with cheese and topped with lobster and crab drenched in delicious oscar sauce.

Terrible Terrible Terrible!  Why is it that my brain is been trained to crave these terribly bad entrees instead of something more healthy, such as... I dunno... steamed broccoli?

Amazing Indian Food

Recently I got a health screening done and my cholesterol is just a little bit high.  The source of cholesterol is mainly in animal fats.  So I'm supposed to try to reduce my meat intake I guess.  I love eating meat.  If I don't eat meat in a meal, I don't feel full.  So what am I supposed to do about it?

Well... take a cue from the nation with the highest number of vegetarians that I know of: India!  Have you tried Indian food before?  Even their vegetarian meals are delicious and satisfying!  Last night I had vegetarian curry for dinner.  I paired it with my mushroom medley and a bunch of steamed bean sprouts.  I think I should try to make more Indian food.

Chocolate Malt Melt-Down

Weight: 165

What did I just do?!  What DID I JUST DO!?  I feel like I have sabotaged myself beyond salvation.  During lunch, I thought to myself: "I think a chocolate shake would be nice."  In the past, I have never been able to finish a chocolate shake, so I figured that I would buy one and maybe eat half of it and let the rest of it melt into the trash.

I went to the drive thru and ordered a chocolate malt and proceeded to drink it on my way back to the office.  I didn't realize that the consistency of a malt is a lot thinner than that of a shake!  I could actually DRINK it through the straw.  By the end of my 10 minute drive back, I had already finished 90% of the malt.

Just now I looked up the calories of the offending item and am horrified to learn that it has a total of 910 calories!  F*CK!  I'm screwed...  How am I going to lose weight in time for my Hawaii trip?  I think I need to strap the baby to my back and go hike a few miles to redeem myself.

Sex and Food

Weight: 164lb.

Yesterday I was so mad at my husband, I went to get McDonalds.  I went, thinking I would pick up a Filet-o-Fish.  But when I saw that one tiny fish burger would cost $3, I went for 20 pc McNuggets for $5.  Mind you, this was after I already ate a lunch of fried rice.

What can I say?  I felt rejected and unloved.  I wanted something to make me feel instantly better.  Sadly, that something turned out to be food.  Still, it's better than finding comfort in the arms of someone else right?

Sometimes, I wonder if there's such a thing as a sex diet?  Instead of finding pleasure and comfort in chocolate or other fatty foods.  I should try making out with my husband more.  "Want a bite of chocolate?  Nah, just give me a nibble of my Honey."  Hahaha!  They do say that chocolate has the same hormones and chemicals as an orgasm right?

O, and FYI... I felt guilty about eating the nuggets, so I just ate a small bowl of cereal for dinner.

More Fruit please!

Pound: 163.8

So I got on the scale today, and my weight had dropped.  Ok... I admit this could be water weight.  But I'd like to think it was something more than just water.  My fancy scale tells my water weight in addition to body fat percentage... and neither of those fluctuated much.

So what have I done differently?  Well... I ate less food.  Also, to help fight the munchies at work, I brought three oranges to work with me everyday.  I'm a software engineer.  It means that my job is one where I try to solve problems with the most elegant solution.  It can get stressful.

I'm sure that oranges are NOT the lowest calorie fruit I could snack on.  But I figure that the water content and the high fiber content must be good for me.  Like most people, getting enough water in a day is something I need to work on.  I've tried snacking on apples, but they are not juicy enough and usually leave me with a stomach ache.  (Yes, I snack on so many apples, that I literally poop apples...  Sorry if that's TMI?)

Day???

It is only the 10th, and I am not surprised to say that I have failed.  If the lack of posts was any evidence, I have not been able to stick to any sort of diet at all.  It's just too hard!  I mean... seriously... the lack of time and energy...   *sigh*  I am ashamed of myself.

Ok, I'm going to go pack myself a lunch for tomorrow.  Hopefully it will be fairly healthy.

Lactation Diet Day 2

Weight: 167

Breakfast: Skillet Egg and Brown Rice + Microwaved Yam
It was a pretty good breakfast!  Very flavorful... that must've been because of the olive oil and salt. I just threw an egg and left over brown rice in the omelet pan and it was ready in no time.  It was a big yam so I brought the rest of it to work to snack on throughout the day.

Lunch: Peruvian stir fried spaghetti + Chicken Soup
It was a coworker's birthday, so we went out for lunch.  It was good, I finished it all... and I have no idea where that dish rates on the health scale. (It'd be sad if I paid for a lunch that I didn't find tasty. )

Dinner: Steamed Shitaki Mushrooms with Thyme,  Bok-Choy+Chinese Sausage fried brown rice
It was a good dinner!  Once more I just threw stuff into the pot and stirred.  One pot wonders, you know?  But a few hours after dinner, both my husband and I were doubled over with gas.  I wonder if there was too much fiber in our meal?  Or maybe it was the expired, dried apricots we ate before dinner?  All I know is that I was in pain for 2 hours.  It made taking care of the baby difficult.

Lacation Diet: Day-1

Weight: 167lb.

Breakfast: Oatmeal, fermented tofu, bean sprouts, baco-bits, chinese pickles, 1 egg.
It tasted depressing.  I mixed it all up in a cereal bowl and sprinkled baco-bits on the top.  I hoped that it would taste like jook (chinese rice porridge).  But it was too thick and paste like.  Next time I will take a picture of it so you get an idea of what I'm doing.

Lunch: Oxtail Stew
There wasn't enough of the stew.  I was still hungry.  Maybe it was because of the lack of chewing action?  I had brought an apple to work to snack on.  I finished the apple pretty quickly and still had the desire to eat.  Ultimately I ended up snacking on the chocolate that someone had brought in for the new years.  With each piece of chocolate I ate, I thought about how I was killing my diet.  Then near the end of the day I munched on some crackers.  I think I need to bring more healthy snacks to work.  Or maybe bring more food?

Dinner: Pork Spareribs + Brown Rice + Microwaved Cabbage
By the time I arrived home with the baby, there was no energy left to cook.  Good thing my husband is skilled enough to toss the defrosted ribs in some soy sauce and throw it into the oven.  By the time I finished feeding the baby, our dinner was ready.  Yea, it was a pretty pathetic looking dinner, but I think it covered the basic food groups right?

Change of plans - Lactation Diet

Today my 7-mo old baby had an allergic reaction to something she ate.  She broke out in hives and vomited.  I felt so bad for her.  She cried and had to be held to sleep.  Even in her sleep she kept crying and whimpering.  So this means I can't be so eager to move her off of breastfeeding and onto solids.  (She hasn't even really taken a liking to solids either.  But I can't blame her... baby food doesn't taste very good.)  In addition to this last, heartbreaking event, she has also been EXTREMELY hungry before bed.  She just wants more milk I guess?

So this is why I'm moving onto a lactation diet.  Hopefully this diet will help increase my milk supply while still allowing me to lose weight.

1.  Drink lots of water.
2.  Eat lots of oatmeal, and avoid refined carbs (white bread, white rice, noodles)
3.  Eat lean protein, but not too much fish (although I REALLY love fish)
4.  Lots of fruit and vegetables.

I just hope I have enough time to prepare the food to follow such a diet.  I have a feeling that I will be relying on the microwave a lot in the next few weeks.  =)
